There are enough Beyoncé fans around the world, who practically worship Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter, to create a “church” with a large congregation. A church, of sorts, is in existence and is made up of Beyoncé fans who believe in all things Beyoncé. The denomination is called Beyism, and her followers are known as the Beyhive.

Beyoncé’s social media following alone could fill hundreds of churches, not to mention the thousands who attend her concerts. But what about the person, not the entertainer? What religion is Beyoncé?

Is Beyoncé a Christian?

Beyoncé was raised as a Methodist, a Christian denomination, in Houston, Texas, and had a privileged childhood. She attended St. John’s United Methodist Church where she was a member of the choir and chorus.

The singer’s religious background has informed her career, beginning with Destiny’s Child and through her iconic solo career. Christian music influences can be found in Beyonce’s albums, while she has also invoked religious imagery in music videos, performances, and concert tours.

Is Jay-Z religious?

Beyonce’s husband, Jay-Z, doesn’t have the same religious background. The Grammy-winning rapper has stated he believes in God, just not religion in the traditional sense.

“For the record, I of course believe in God, but I believe in one God,” Jay-Z said in a 2010 radio interview with Hot97. “If people must know my religious beliefs, I believe in one God. I don’t believe in religion. I don’t believe in Christians or Muslims. I think all that separates people. I think it’s one God. I think it’s all the same God, and I don’t believe in Hell.”

Jay-Z’s lyrics also back up those views. Songs off his album Magna Carta Holy Grail encourage skepticism around religion. Other lines also blame religion for dividing communities.

Who officiated Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s wedding?

Beyonce’s religion appears to play a bigger role in her life than for Jay-Z, at least publicly. Like much of their personal lives, the celebrity couple try to keep things as private as possible.

That also included their wedding. The pair married in a private ceremony in New York City in 2008. Pastor Rudy Rasmus from Beyonce’s church in Houston officiated the wedding.

Rasmus and Beyonce remain close. The two have partnered on several charitable events and organizations, with Rasmus often sharing details on Instagram.
