Sex is incessantly hinted at in this saucy triangle [from Andre Roussin’s play and Nancy Mitford’s English stage adaptation] which keeps husband and wife intact for the moral code. It all takes place on a South Pacific island with Ava Gardner down to her lace BVDs and much sly innuendo about her husband’s preoccupation with everything else but her gender.

Government business has left Stewart Granger with little time to practise the arts of a husband, so Gardner turns to hubby’s best friend (David Niven) for companionship. Transfer this situation to a deserted tropical isle after a shipwreck, feed the principals a stimulating seafood diet, mostly oysters, and something has to give.

As the choice feminine tidbit who fires the masculine libido, Gardner is ideal casting. Equally adept and effective is Granger as Gardner’s too-busy-to-love husband. Matching the above two is Niven, in a very amusing takeoff on a proper Englishman who wants to preempt Granger’s marital rights with Gardner.
