Robert Wankel - Variety500 - Top 500 Entertainment Business Leaders

As head of the 120-year-old Shubert Organization, Wankel oversees 17 of the 41 theaters on New York’s Great White Way, Off-Broadway’s New World Stages and Stage 42, and the Forrest Theatre in Philadelphia. Naturally, they all closed when the pandemic struck, halting the runs of Broadway tenants including “Betrayal,” “Freestyle Love Supreme,” “Jagged Little Pill,” “Slave Play” and “The Inheritance.” But as chairman of the board of the Shubert Foundation, he supported 560 nonprofit arts orgs in 2020 with a total of $32 million in grants. With venues closed, the organization and Neil Meron are partnering to develop a new Broadway musical adaptation of “Some Like It Hot,” directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw.
