October is here and as such it's time for all the halloween decorations and autumn wreaths once more. Yep, Autumn has FALLen (see what I did there?) into place, much to our delight, and there’s something about snuggling up under a throw blanket with a warm mug of cocoa. The best part for us is treating ourselves to some new candles but, since seeing some of our fave celebs - Kylie Jenner and Kourtney Kardashian, to name a few - and their epic Halloween decorations over the past few years, we’ve been inspired to do more.
Trawling through Etsy and buying bits to recreate their spooky (but chic) interiors has become my evening routine, and I think I’ve pretty much clicked on - and bought - every single pumpkin-themed item there is out there. The trick is to do it tastefully like The Kardashians stars themselves, with nods to Halloween rather than a full-blown haunted house situation. The last thing I want to do is be terrified of my own abode.
How can I decorate my house for autumn?
Begin by buying pieces that will go with the rest of your house but that bring a bit of an autumnal or Gothic slant. What you buy all depends on your own taste, of course, and how far into the theme of #spookyseason you want to go, but I would start off simple and build from there if you feel it needs adding to. Opt for hues such as oranges, reds and browns and it’ll naturally begin to feel more like autumn, and bring in hints of black, white and gold for that Halloween edge.
Take notes from your Christmas decorations; if you usually hang a wreath from your front door in December, why not pop one up for October and November? No stranger to a garland on your fireplace during the festive season? Swap the fir leaf designs for maple and oak. You could even put a little pumpkin patch display in the place you’ll designate for your Christmas tree in a few months time.
When should you put up autumn decorations?
As soon as the weather starts to turn at the end of September/start of October (AKA now), it’s time to get out those pumpkin spice-scented candles and candy corn sweets. There’s no time schedule like there is with Christmas (does anyone actually follow that anyway?), so you can dance to the beat of your own drum. The earlier the better, I say. Get your cupboards stocked up with those multi-pack bags of sweets and start hanging bat silhouettes in your windows, because the best time of year has arrived.
